Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
Begun in 1860, this was an early attempt to build a comprehensive railroad terminal and shop complex. The trainshed is the oldest remaining example of early iron roof construction, the first step in the evolution of modern steel building methods. The whole complex is also a precedent for comprehensive industrial planning that became standard railroad practice in the last quarter of the 19th century. (Boundary enlarged: June 2, 1978.)
