Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
Built in 1818 as a family townhouse, it remained in the Telfair family until 1875. It was then bequeathed to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a public museum. Among the oldest museums in the Southeast, it opened as a free art museum in 1886; it houses an important collection of paintings, including colonial and Federal portraits.
