Henry W. Grady was a major proponent of national reconciliation during the post-Civil War era, delivering his famous "New South" speech in 1886 in New York City. As editor of the "Atlanta Constitution," Grady promoted southern industry and agricultural diversification. The house was built in the 1840s and is a Greek Revival mansion dominated by a giant-order Doric portico on three sides.
