Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 5, 1961):
This is the oldest surviving building of a Delaware Valley Swedish congregation, built on the site of the Fort Christina settlement's first burial ground in 1638. Though it was constructed after the fall of New Sweden, services were held in Swedish well into the 18th century. It has housed an Episcopal parish since 1791.
