Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
The center of Black economic, social, and cultural activities in Atlanta from the 1890s to the 1930s. The Sweet Auburn District reflects an important element in the life of the Afro-American community in a segregated South.

Condition:
A major redevelopment project ($45 million) by Big Bethel AME Church and the Integral Group is underway in this small district, approximately three blocks. The project will drastically change the historic character of almost one entire block. Demolition of historic buildings has already occurred, a large parking deck is partially constructed, additional new construction will provide 154 condos and 27,000 feet of retail space. Due to imminent threat of loss of historic integrity, SHPO recommends reevaluation of this Landmark district.
