Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
This is the site of the home of Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable (1745-1818), the Black pioneer, fur trader and independent entrepreneur whose establishment of a trading post at this location marked the beginning of the city of Chicago.
