Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 7, 1976):
Now used by Sears, Roebuck, and Company, this proto-skyscraper is the masterpiece of its architect, William Le Baron Jenney (1832-1907). It is outstanding for the integration of structural and aesthetic design elements in its skeleton construction.

Condition:
No threats indicated at this time.

Management completed city of Chicago mandated Critical Inspection: north, west, east facade--November 2006. Completed mandated visual inspection--North, East, West facade, May 2008. No facade repairs indicated by engineering reports.
