Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
The first industrial research laboratory in the U.S. built for the specific purpose of conducting pharmacological research. Constructed in 1902, this facility marked the institutionalization of a pure science research approach which has been responsible for many of the modern "wonder" drugs.

Condition:
This NHL has been recommended for de-designation since 2002 due to loss of integrity based on modifications.

There are no threats at this time.
