Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
This was the home (1918-1944) of the early 20th-century African-American composer, songwriter and orchestra conductor whom Duke Ellington called "The master of all masters of our people." Although he was classically trained, Cook turned his attention to "ragtime" and helped spread the gospel of black-inspired music through his compositions and musical comedies.
