Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1981):
From 1858 to 1887, this was the home of Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth (1810-1895), American Congregational minister, teacher, and apiarist, who in 1851 discovered the principle of the "bee space". This discovery led him to invent a moveable frame that made it possible to remove honey-laden combs from a hive without destroying it. The frame revolutionized beekeeping.
