Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
Watson was a principal founder of the Populist Party and first to urge a United front between white and black farmers. He ran as the Vice Presidential candidate on the Populist Ticket in 1896. His support for agrarian interests gave him a considerable following among Southern rural Whites. This was his home from 1905 until his death in 1922.
