Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
From 1900 to 1903, this was the residence of Scott Joplin (1868-1917), one of America's significant composers. His work with the musical genre later known as Ragtime provided important foundations for modern American music, combining elements of Midwestern folk and Afro-American melodic rhythmic traditions within the structural contexts of Western European musical forms.

Concerns with context and site control led the State's Division of State Parks (as property owner) to acquire some adjacent properties in order to gain better control of the site and setting for the NHL. This acquisition increased the DNR/DSP property ownership to 3.86 acres in December 2003.

The State plans to stabilize the adjacent row houses within the next 12 months, particularly the west bay of the row houses to the east of the NHL. Other plans include repairs to the rear porch of the Joplin residence, the replacement of gutters, and the installation of an ADA ramp to provide access to the porch and building.
