Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 14, 1986):
One of two surviving SOUTH DAKOTA class battleships built by the United States as part of the continued American preparation for war should it come, MASSACHUSETTS saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters. The ship fired the first and last American 16-inch shells of World War II. At the war's end, MASSACHUSETTS had earned 11 battle stars for her combat service.

$ 360,000 in federal matching funds was awarded to the battleship through the Save America's Treasures program in 2004. Funds will be used to restore the shipÂ’s deteriorated deck.
