Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 20, 1961):
One of the most important shell mound sites in the Southeast, giving information on Archaic Indians who lived in the Savannah River drainage area.

The private owner donated Stallings Island to the archeological Conservancy, which has developed a preservation plan to protect the archeological remains on this site from vandalism..
