Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 5, 1977):
Constructed in the late 17th century, this fortification is the oldest extant structure in the Virgin Islands. It was the focal point of early Danish settlement, housing Governors and Lutheran ministers as well as providing protection for settlers.

Condition:
There are no threats to the landmark at this time.

Since 2005, the landmark has been undergoing a major conservation and stabilization project
