Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 9, 1960):
The largest and most prosperous 18th-century metropolis south of Philadelphia, many of Charleston's residences and public buildings retain their period character.

Condition:
The historic district is in generally good condition; some individual buildings are in need of repair, but it is overall stable.

A new, updated preservation plan was adopted by City Council June 2008; should result in further strengthening of existing programs and the creation/expansion of review areas and public outreach.
