Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 14, 1986):
The only operative unaltered survivor of the many Liberty ships built during World War II as an emergency response to a critical shortage of maritime cargo ships. Participated in the D-Day invasion of France in 1944. In 1984 she was made a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The SS Jeremiah O’Brien received a 2003 Save America's Treasures grant for $200,000. Funds will be used to address corrosion that threatens the watertight integrity of the ship.
