Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 23, 1986):
Significant because of its long and close association with Ulysses S. Grant, White Haven was the home of his wife, Julia Dent Grant. The Grants met and courted here, they lived here for a short period in the 1850s, and it was to here that Grant originally planned to retire, before the political scandals of his administration and financial difficulties made that impractical.

Condition:
There is no threat to the landmark at this time.

The new visitor’s center is complete and now screens White Haven from Grant Road and the adjacent bike path. Work is advancing on the rehabilitation of the barn, which was moved from the flood plain to higher ground. The displays in the historic home are almost complete.
