Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
Revered as the Protestant "mother church" of Hawaii, this structure (1842) is an outgrowth of the original Mission Church founded in Boston (1819) and of the first foreign church on Oahu (1820). As the state church, it was the scene of many celebrated events--inaugurations, funerals, weddings, thanksgiving ceremonies--associated with the Hawaiian Kingdom.
