Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 11, 1989):
The Luna is an early example of a diesel-electric propelled vessel and one of a handful of wooden-hulled tugboats in operating condition remaining in the United States. She is also the last full-sized wooden harbor tug on the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts. The successful operation of the Luna was a major influence on tugboat propulsion design in this and other countries.

Condition:
After suffering years of severe physical deterioration as a result of inactivity and flooding, the Luna’s hull was rebuilt in 2001 and 2002 with $800,000 in public donations and state and federal funding. Work continues on the topsides and interior of the tug. Continue rehabilitation and maintenance programs.

The owner should continue rehabilitation and maintenance programs.
