Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 16, 1984):
Since the launch of America's first earth satellite in 1958, the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station has been America's premier facility devoted to space exploration. The Landmark consists of discontiguous sites within the Air Force Station, encompassing Launch Pads 5, 6, 14, 19, 26, 34, the mobile service tower at Pad 13, and the original Mission Control Room.

Condition:
Ongoing renovation and upgrading of facilities includes proposed demolition NASA’s original Mission Control Center (Project Mercury) and other facilities.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
NPS and the SHPO should monitor the Section 106 review of the Air Force’s proposal and provide technical assistance, as needed. The National Park Service should consider updating and revising the National Historic Landmark study for this property.
