Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
On January 20, 1778, Captain James Cook, the first European known to have sighted the Hawaiian Islands, made his initial landing upon Island soil at this site off the mouth of the Waimea River on the southwestern coast of Kauai.
