Statement of Significance (as of designation - February 4, 1985):
Captured from the Japanese by U.S. Marines in 1944, in coordination with the U.S. Army attack on Kwajalein Island. The taking of Kwajalein Atoll allowed American forces to accelerate the schedule for further advances in the Central Pacific during World War II.
