Statement of Significance (as of designation - February 4, 1985):
During World War II, this was the principal port on the West Coast for delivering personnel, materiel, weapons, and ammunition to the fighting fronts in the Pacific Theater.
Condition:
There are no threats to the landmark.
The Fort Mason Foundation is currently planning for the rehabilitation of Pier Shed 2 (lower Fort Mason), a major special events and theater space. NPS is exploring options for the seismic upgrade of Pier 1 (lower Fort Mason).
