Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 3, 1985):
In operation since 1931, this is the first full-scale wind tunnel built by NACA. It greatly contributed to the design of an entire new generation of aircraft in the 1930s and 1940s.

Condition:
NASA is in negotiations with the ACHP, NPS and the Virginia State Historic Preservation Office over mitigation of possible demolishment of this Landmark.

NASA plans to demolish the tunnel at the termination of its current least to Old Dominion University in August 2009.
