Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 3, 1985):
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been the primary NASA center for the unmanned exploration of the planets. The Space Flight Operations Facility (1963) is the hub of the communications network through which NASA controls its unmanned spacecraft flying in deep space.
