Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 14, 1986):
A GATO class submarine that is the lowest numbered World War II submarine preserved today, and only one of that era that has not been altered to accomodate civilian visitor access. Launched in March 1943, COD was dispatched to the western Pacific, where she operated out of Australia and the Philippines. She made seven war patrols, sinking ten warships, 30 merchant ships, and damaging seven vessels. She was awarded seven battle stars for her service in World War II.

Condition:
The ship remains in excellent condition and is inspected annually by the US Navy. There are no threats to the landmark at this time.

Two 1600 HP GM Cleveland diesel engines were recently acquired that were originally used aboard another WW II Submarine. The two engines will be used for parts for the restoration of the COD’s engines. The COD’s Mark IV Torpedo Data Computer has been restored to full operation. Numerous valves and gauges have been removed and are in the process of being restored. Future planned maintenance includes dry docking in order to inspect the hull and complete necessary repairs. The ship was last dry docked in 1963.
