Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 14, 1986):
Commissioned November 6, 1943, PAMPANITO is a Balao-class submarine built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and is representative of the U.S. submarine forces that fought against Japan in World War II. She made six war patrols and is credited with sinking five Japanese ships. For her World War II service, PAMPANITO earned six battle stars. She was decommissioned in 1945.
