Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 3, 2001):
The Charlesfort-Santa Elena site is nationally signficant because it illustrates the competition for New World resources between two European colonial powers, France and Spain. Charlesfort (1562-1563) was a French site established by Jean Ribault. Founded in 1566, Santa Elena was the first capital of Spanish Florida until 1587.
