Statement of Significance (as of designation - February 27, 1987):
The first public botanical garden in the U.S. Adjacent to the Boston Common, it was landscaped during the 1860s and retains its French Second Empire character. It has become a repository of important outdoor sculpture, and is well known for the Swan Boats that have sailed in its pond since 1877.
