This site commemorates Admiral Chester W. Nimitz's role as the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. Nimitz (1885-1966) was commander from 1942 until mid-December 1945, commanding all American land, sea, and air areas. Admiral Nimitz played a major role in campaigns such as the Battle of Midway, the liberation of Guam, and the seizure of of Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas.
