Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 28, 1987):
This structure is representative of the commitment of Stephen T. Mather, first Director of the National Park Service, to an architectural aesthetic appropriate for the National Park lands. He personally funded this structure, which became the design standard for building in the National Park System through World War II.

Condition:
The NHL is in good condition.

The building underwent seismic upgrades in 2007-2008
