On August 12, 1805, when he reached the summit of this pass, Meriwether Lewis stood on the boundary of newly-acquired Louisana, looking west to the snow-capped peaks of the Bitterroot and Salmon River Ranges, into what was then Spanish territory. Situated on a remote section of the Beaverhead Range, at an elevation of 7373' above sea level, Lehmi Pass was the point where the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the Continental Divide.

It does not seem as though the ARPA vilolation has been completly resolved. Energy deveolopment and transport corridors have been mentioned in the area.
