Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 5, 1989):
This site, commanding an excellent view of a high, glaciated lake and mountain country, preserves a traditional Nez Perce ancestral campground associated with religious and cultural values that have persisted for more than the century that has elapsed since the band of nontreaty Nez Perce led by Young Chief Joseph was driven out.

Development is proposed on buffer zone managed by NPS but outside the NHL boundaries. The land was designated in 1992 as a buffer zone for the NHL. Development on this site would threaten the visual and potential archcheological integrity of the site.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
The NPS will file a "Complaint in Condemnation" on 7.91 acres of the disputed parcel. This action should effectively forestall any future development on the parcel while the NPS continues to negotiate for acquisition. Another .47 acres involving a disputed fenceline is being filed on for "Adverse Possession", again to insure that no development or disturbance can occur.
