Statement of Significance (as of designation - March 28, 1989):
The Calumet Historic District reflects the historic operation of one of the leading copper-mining companies on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. Along with the Quincy Mining Company, the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company (C&H) represents the greatest longevity, production, technical innovations, and influence in the Michigan industry and for the late-19th century copper industry nationwide. Calumet includes industrial, commercial and residential areas.

Condition:
Threats to the NHL include, damaging uses, demolition, inappropriate alterations, new construction and development in the area. Threats to neglect due to lack of fudning and socio-economic situations are greatly impacting the NHL.

No recent actions. No zoning, no controls of private property owners, and boundaries are being ignored with aggressive development in the area.
