Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 19, 1960):
In 1865, the citizens of Galena presented this two story brick house to Gen. U.S. Grant, the victorious Union commander. Grant lived here until he became Secretary of War in 1867 and again, briefly, following the end of his Presidency and trip around the world.

Condition:
Cutbacks in state funding to state owned historic sites may cause problems in the future.
