Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 4, 1992):
Built in 1886, ISAAC H. EVANS is the oldest surviving oyster schooner, a type whose rig and centerboard made it easier to handle in shallow inlets and bays, and whose wide decks provided stability and space for freight. EVANS spent most of her active career fishing and freighting on Delaware Bay; currently, she serves as a Maine windjammer.
