Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 4, 1992):
Built in 1927 for oyster dredging, J. & E. RIGGIN represents the late and final form of the oyster schooner. In this type, the principles of naval architecture led to finer-lined vessels with more emphasis on better hydrodynamic characteristics. Originally sail powered, in 1946 she was converted to a motor vessel; in 1974, her sailing rig was restored for service as a windjammer.
