Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 19, 1993):
Principia College Historic District represents the final phase of the career of Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957) as a designer of houses and public buildings, and as an architect significantly involved in campus planning and design for educational institutions. Maybeck designed thirteen buildings that were constructed at this site between 1931 and 1946; eleven of those structures are still standing.

Condition:
Principia College Historic District has no threatened buildings at this time.

In order to meet Illinois Fire Safety code requirements and Illinois State law regarding sprinkler systems in dormitories, a fire safety renovation program is being implemented. This program, at substantial cost, is being implemented for each dormitory.
