Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 19, 1994):
Architect-builder Francis Costigan's house for Charles Lewis Shrewsbury is a wonderful example of the Classical Revival style, restrained and with beautiful detailing. Construction began in 1846 and was completed in 1849. The house is an example of Regency, which pushed vertical line and measurements higher and higher until the proportions of the original Greek and Roman prototypes had been exagerated, though the classical detail survived.
