Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
Constructed in 1861, this structure was the residence of Seaman A. Knapp (1833-1911), noted agriculturist and teacher, and James Wilson (1836-1920, Secretary of Agriculture (1897-1913). It is now within the campus of Iowa State University.

The house is in good condition, is well maintained,and is an important part of campus life at the university.

Interior restoration of an historic fireplace in the library, which was begun in 2006, is complete.
