Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 19, 1960):
Fort Leavenworth has been in continuous occupation by the military since it was first established in 1827 to protect caravans on the Santa Fe Trail. The fort played a pivotal roles in the Mexican and Civil Wars, and it became the temporary capital of Kansas Territory in 1854.

Condition:
The landmark is in good condition, but mitigating issues warrant moving the threat level to "watch."

General rehab of buildings for new and continued uses especially housing. Continued work with Cultural Resources manager to reconcile anti-terrorism standards from DoD with Secretary of the Interior's Standards.
