Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 23, 1963):
With its water, abundant grass, and timber, Council Grove was a natural stopping place on the Santa Fe Trail. It is named for the occasion of an 1825 treaty negotiation between the Federal government and the Osage Indians which guaranteed the Santa Fe caravans safe passage through Osage territory.

Condition:
No threats reported on the Santa Fe Trail Ruts, the Hays Tavern, the Seth Hays House, or the Council Oak and Post Office Oak.

SHPO Staff visited the site in June 2007. The current district includes discotihuous sites. A local group has received HPF grant monies to complete a survey of downtown properties with the intent of listing a district in the National Register.
