Statement of Significance (as of designation - September 23, 1964):
This site, on Green River, is one of the most fully documented and largest of the Archaic shell heap sites in the Eastern United States, and has provided vital information on the Archaic Indian population. Excavation has yielded an important collection of skeletal material from more than 1200 burials.
