Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
This is the type site for the Marksville Culture, a southern variant of the Ohio Hopewell. Its discovery in the 1930s led to the recognition that the Hopewellian culture was more widespread than had previously been thought. A number of the culture's characteristic burial mounds remain..
