Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
Known as the "French Quarter," this 85-block area almost coincides with the original city plan, laid out in 1721. Within the District is a distinctive variety of architectural styles. They include numerous vernacular structures that provide a unique ambiance and reflect the multinational heritage of New Orleans, as well as a number of individual National Historic Landmarks.

Condition:
Formosan termites continue to threaten historic integrity.

Deteriorated conditions and hurricane damage from the 2005 hurricane season further jeopardize the NHL.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
Formosan termites infest the entire district. The city should continue developing strategies to combat the termites.
