Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
Construction of the canal in 1855 allowed exploitation of the resources of the Lake Superior area. It permits passage between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, and ranks with the Erie and the Illinois and Michigan canals as the most successful waterways constructed during the ante-bellum era.

Condition:
No threats to the property but recommendations to overall care of the property are to protect, repair and rehabilitate.

A Cultural Resource Management Plan was developed and accepted by the MI SHPO in January 2006. A fence was installed around a portion of the an historic Native American Burial Ground in Brady Park. Under NAGPRA, the fence installation required a Plan of Action, which was coordinated with various Native American Indian Tribes. The roofs were replaced at the Unit 10 Power House and a small storage building.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
Residents need education on the importance of the historic designed landscape of the canal area.
