Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 29, 1962):
Established in 1907 as a living memorial to Edward MacDowell (1861-1908), one of the first Americans to be recognized as a serious composer, the colony--on 400 acres of forest and meadow land--has since become known internationally as a contemporary arts center, offering individuals of the highest talent the time and space necessary to produce enduring works of the imagination.
