Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 19, 1964):
Similar to Graham Cave in many respects, Research Cave is a significant prehistoric Indian site containing deposits that reflect an intermittent occupation over a period of at least 8,000 years.

Condition:
The site has been extensively looted over time with probable overall loss of integrity to remaining deposits.

Research Cave is in private ownership, but the current owners have not been identified. People familiar with the Portland, MO, vicinity report that the property is now fenced and gated to limit the number of unauthorized visits to the site.
