Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
Built in 1859-1860 as the central feature of a self-sufficient community on Missouri's western frontier, Watkins Mill is probably the best preserved example of a mid-19th century woolen mill. Not only the building, but the rare machinery and the voluminous business records also have been preserved.

The Division of State Parks installed new roofs on the Watkins residence and summer kitchen. The roofs replaced were not historic, not original. Appropriate wood shakes were used for both. Wood trim on school and church were painted within the last 2 years. NPS MWRO staff are working on a documentation improvement project, to revise and correct errors and omissions in 1970s nomination. NPS made site visits on May 4 and July 14-15, 2004 to tour the property and discuss the project.
